Welcome to Emails in the Wild – the blog series where I break down real-life emails from big-name entrepreneurs and unpack the strategies behind their success.
In each post, I’ll show you why each email works and exactly how YOU can use their frameworks, tactics, and strategies in your own email marketing efforts.
In this post, we’re breaking down a storytelling-based webinar invite email example from top entrepreneur and business mentor Jenna Kutcher.
This email is the third email she sent to start marketing her webinar, “From Zero Subscribers (or Zero Strategy) to an Engaged Email List That Lasts”.
And in this example, she uses storytelling, relatability, and emotional clarity to connect with the audience and increase urgency to act now, not “someday” without sounding gimmick-y.
(And the story she shares brilliantly highlights a common blind spot for many entrepreneurs and readers in her audience: no email list!!)

Subject line: The reason you need to start an email list now, not someday
Main goal: Get readers to recognize the cost of waiting and take immediate action to register
Why it works:
How to use it:
This is a story-driven email that starts with a moment of discomfort for Jenna in her entrepreneurial career:
Being asked about the size of her email list and having no good answer.
Sharing this makes her human and trustworthy AND her readers identify with her more when they learn that Jenna used to be in their shoes.
From there, she layers in lessons, urgency, and a powerful payoff:
❓ FAQ: Should I share vulnerable stories in promotional emails?
Heck yes!! Stories are what make you relatable, connect you with your audience, and when done authentically, your vulnerability builds trust and makes your CTA feel grounded in your actual experiences.
❓ FAQ: Can story-based emails work for product launches?
Absolutely. Stories connect emotionally and are a great way to illustrate a before & after transformation.
Subject Line: “The reason you need to start an email list now, not someday”
This headline is objection-busting by addressing the procrastination mindset head-on!!
Storytelling with Relatable Stakes
The first line is:
I remember like it was yesterday… "What’s the size of your email list?”
We’re dropped straight into a moment of tension.
There’s no fluff or background noise in this story.
Just discomfort, self-doubt, and a clear realization.
This draws the reader in and immediately taps into the fear of being unprepared (but doesn’t go too deep into fear…after all, look where Jenna is now!).
The Before & After Transformation
Jenna recalls how she had to figure everything out on her own…the hard way.
This kind of humor and honesty makes her relatable, and then she seamlessly shifts into results and the promise of the webinar, illustrated rather than explained.
Strategic CTAs + Simplicity
The email includes multiple calls to action like her other emails with one-click registration and session time options, but this one does something different:
The final CTA is paired with a PS story that reinforces the emotional takeaway.
But throughout there’s no over-selling. Just guidance.
Bonus PS with Moral of the Story
Jenna closes with a new element in this email: a PS.
She softens any tension that might arise from the story (the blunt mentor, the initial embarrassment) and brings it back to the reader.

Solid email frameworks like this one are built on marketing, copywriting, and psychological strategies that are proven and have been around forever.
And they are hella versatile!! So just cuz this email is inviting you to a webinar, this general framework can be used in a variety of emails – with a few tweaks…
The idea here is to follow the framework and structure of the email, but to put in your own words, content, pain points, thoughts, and CTAs.
That’s where success lies.
Not in trying to use this email as a template, but to use it as a framework to organize and develop your emails with more intention and proven copywriting strategies behind it.
So with that in mind, here are 4 ways you could use this framework (aka, the emails structure) in your own email marketing:
This webinar invite email example uses the power of storytelling and emotional resonance to inspire action by sharing vulnerability and personal transformation.
And because it’s the third in a four-part invite sequence, it naturally fits within the full strategy.
